Supporting Iraq’s Energy Future: Smart Metering and AI Integration

May 7, 2025

As Iraq moves toward a more modern and sustainable energy landscape, the development of advanced infrastructure plays a crucial role. Contributing to this transformation is Smart Meters Collection and Electrical Services Ltd., a company under Harlow Group, with a focus on supporting the national energy transition through Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and next-generation grid solutions.

As part of Harlow Group’s broader involvement in Iraq’s energy infrastructure—particularly through strategic projects like the Al Khairat Thermal Power Plant—plans are being explored to deploy between 100,000 to 150,000 smart meters in collaboration with the Ministry of Electricity (MOE). This potential initiative, aligned with the development of Al Khairat and led by Harlow International (the Group’s energy subsidiary), is currently under study. It also includes the possibility of integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance system intelligence, efficiency, and overall performance.

Smart Meters: Enabling a Smarter Grid for Iraq

Smart meters offer a significant leap forward in energy monitoring and management. Unlike traditional mechanical meters, smart meters provide two-way communication between consumers and utility providers, offering near real-time data collection and remote reading capabilities.

Potential Benefits for Iraq’s Energy Sector:

  • More Accurate Billing – Reduces the reliance on manual readings and estimates, increasing transparency.
  • Minimized Energy Losses – Supports efforts to identify inefficiencies and outdated infrastructure challenges.
  • Dynamic Load Management – Helps utilities observe and adjust to grid demands effectively.
  • Consumer Awareness – Empowers end-users with insights into their consumption habits and energy-saving opportunities.

Such advancements align with Iraq’s energy sector aspirations for increased reliability, efficiency, and customer-centric service models.

AI Integration: Driving Innovation in Smart Energy Infrastructure

Artificial Intelligence, when integrated with AMI systems, can help unlock substantial operational improvements:

  • Predictive Insights – AI can detect anomalies and anticipate equipment maintenance needs, enhancing system uptime.
  • Improved Forecasting – Supports utilities in anticipating demand trends, aiding in resource planning.
  • Enhanced Monitoring – Identifies irregularities in usage data that may suggest inefficiencies or faults.
  • Renewable Compatibility – Enables more adaptive responses to fluctuations from renewable energy sources, improving grid flexibility.

AI-driven analytics and automation pave the way for data-informed decisions and proactive energy management.

Our Role in Iraq’s Energy Development

As part of the Harlow Group, Smart Meters Collection and Electrical Services Ltd. Will be exploring opportunities to:

  • Work alongside relevant authorities and distribution companies to introduce AMI across designated regions.
  • Provide and support the installation of smart meters in coordination with national infrastructure priorities.
  • Promote the integration of AI for enhanced grid intelligence and operational insight.
  • Share technical expertise to support Iraq’s vision for improved energy performance and public service delivery.

These efforts contribute to broader initiatives aimed at improving energy access, system modernization, and the promotion of digital solutions in public utilities.

Looking Ahead

With a growing population and increasing energy demands, Iraq’s path to a modern grid system is both urgent and promising. By leveraging advanced metering and AI technologies—and through the capabilities and local presence of companies like Smart Meters Collection and Electrical Services Ltd.—Iraq is positioned to make significant strides toward a more intelligent, efficient, and customer-responsive energy future.
